Equality Schemes

Equality schemes or action plans, are mechanisms by which Public Sector organisations can explain to the public and other stake holders how they deliver Equal Opportunities through both their employment practices and the ways in which services are designed and delivered.

Following the introduction of the Single Equality Act in 2010, organisations now have more flexibility about how they publish Equality Information. However, they will still have to describe their specific Equality priorities and why they have chosen these.

If developed well, equality documentation will provide a structured framework within which:

  •  The equality objectives of the organisation can be described;
  •  The reasons for their choice explained and supported with evidence;
  •  Specific activities which will be undertaken to achieve measurable outcomes and progress towards meeting these reported upon.

Private Sector Organisations can use an Equality Plan as part of the evidence they use when submitting tenders to demonstrate their commitment to delivering Equality of Opportunity.

Good Equality Schemes are ones which:

  •  Are created through consultation with all stake holders;
  •  Contain actions and targets which are recognised by the organisations staff as things which they are responsible for in their work;
  •  Are reviewed and updated regularly to reflect both progress in achieving the equality priorities identified, and
  •  changes of focus within organisational priorities and how these changes impact upon the achievement of the organisations equality objectives.

Equality Management Services can work with you either to support you to improve or modify your equality plan, or to run consultation events with your stakeholders.
